Driver's Licence Information

What do I need to do in order to get a licence?

The first step to obtaining a licence is completing the Driver's License Application Form. You will also need to have a local medical practioner complete the medical section of this form to certify that you are fit to operate a motor vehicle. The completed medical examination form is only valid for 3 months.

Once you have completed the application, you must then take the TCD theory examination. This exam will allow you to obtain your learners permit. You must bring your birth certificate or valid passport (a copy of your work permit, if you are a guest worker) and the completed application form to TCD. This information will be verified and you will be administered the theory exam via computer. The exam is a set of multiple choice questions, designed to test your general knowledge of the rules of the road, local signage and speed limits. The computerized test is based on the Traffic Code Handbook which can be purchased at TCD.

The next step after the theory exam is the practical examination. This test will be undertaken in your selected vehicle category. In order to take this test you will have to schedule an appointment. You can make an appointment by phone any time during regular business hours or you may schedule your appointment in person at the main TCD office. You may also schedule an appointment online by registering on www.etcd.gov.bm for a user account. The test for all cycles is undertaken at the TCD testing grounds and covers basic topics. All tests for 4 wheel vehicles consist of a parallel parking test, a reversing test, and a supervised on road driving test.

After successful completion of all of these steps you will receive a driver's licence to operate a motor vehicle on Bermuda's roads for the class of vehicle you were tested in. License fees vary and you can find a full schedule under the Rates and Fees section of our website.
